Outdoor Lighting Design in Etobicoke

The lights are the easy part. Deciding what to light, where the run starts and where the control box hides is what makes a house look finished instead of busy.

Outdoor lighting design is planning the job before anything gets mounted: which rooflines to light, where the run starts and ends, where the joins and control box go, which Govee kit fits, and which colours and schedules you'll actually use. With permanent lights, that plan is what you see every night.

Below: what to light first, where the run should start and end, which colours work on a house, and how to choose between the Govee Lights 2 and Pro.

Start here

What should I light first?

Think about the house the way your neighbours see it: from the street, at night.

  • The front rooflines and peaks. That's what people see from the street and the driveway. Start there.
  • The whole line, not half of it. A run that stops partway across the front looks unfinished. If the budget is tight, light one whole section well rather than everything halfway.
  • The garage. It's often the longest straight run on the front, and the first thing people see when they pull in.
  • The back can wait. Unless you spend summer nights in the backyard, it's the last place to light.

Layout

Where should the run start and end?

Three things decide it.

Near the outlet

The run starts close to your outdoor outlet, so the power cable doesn't cross the front of the house.

At a corner

A run that ends at a corner looks planned. With the Pro, we cut it to end there. With the Lights 2, the length decides, so plan where any extra goes.

Power out of sight

The joins and the control box go somewhere sheltered. On the Lights 2 they're rated IP65. On the Pro, Govee lists the adapter for indoor use.

Colours and scenes

Which colours work on a house?

Warm white is the everyday setting. It looks like good architectural lighting, and it works on any night of the year.

Holiday colours are for the weeks that call for them: orange for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, bright colours for Diwali, team colours on game night. Save them in the app ahead of time, and set a schedule so the lights come on at dusk without anyone touching a phone.

Choosing a kit

Govee Lights 2 or Pro: which fits my house?

The biggest difference is cutting. You can't cut the Permanent Outdoor Lights 2, which comes in 50, 100 or 150 ft, so the plan has to work with the length you buy. You can cut the Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro, which comes in 100, 150 or 200 ft. To install it properly, we cut it to fit your roofline.

Longer rooflines and houses with lots of peaks and corners are where that difference shows most. Compare the two side by side.
