Can You Cut Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights?
You've measured the front of the house at 112 feet. The box says 100 or 150. Which one do you buy, and can you just trim off the extra?
It depends on the model. Govee says the Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 can't be cut, and one set stops at 150 ft. The Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro can be cut, and it's one of Govee's longest, with runs up to 200 ft. To install a Pro properly, we cut it to fit your roofline.
Below: the lengths each model comes in, a planner that works out what your roofline needs, how to measure without climbing, and what to do when the numbers don't line up.
Lights 2 vs Pro
What's the biggest difference between the Govee Lights 2 and the Pro?
Cutting. You can't cut the Permanent Outdoor Lights 2. You can cut the Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro. That one difference decides how the whole run gets planned.
Permanent Outdoor Lights 2
- Sold in 50, 100 or 150 ft
- One set stops at 150 ft, extensions included
- The run is planned around the length you buy
Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro
- Sold in 100, 150 or 200 ft, in white or black
- One set goes to 200 ft, extensions included
- To install it properly, we cut it to fit your roofline

Length planner
How much do I need for my house?
Pick the model, then add each stretch of roofline you want lit. Count both slopes of every peak. The planner adds it up and shows which lengths reach it.
The planner counts lit length only.
How do I measure my roofline?
You can get most of it without a ladder.
- Flat eaves: measure along the ground directly under them. A level edge is the same length as the ground below it.
- Peaks: measure each slope, not the width of the gable. A sloped edge is always longer than the ground under it, so a width measurement comes up short.
- Only what you want lit: the front, the garage, the sides people see from the street. Leave out the back unless you want it.
- Your outlet: note where your outdoor outlet is, and how far it is from where you want the lights to start.
What if my roofline doesn't match a kit length?
It almost never matches exactly. Here's how each case plays out.
A bit short
Add 16.4 ft extension lights until you reach it. The whole set has to stay at or under 150 ft on the Lights 2, or 200 ft on the Pro.
A bit long
On the Pro, the extra gets cut off, and that's how we fit it to a roofline. The Lights 2 can't be trimmed, so the extra has to go somewhere, like around a corner or along a side eave.
Over 150 ft
More than one set of Lights 2 covers. The Pro goes to 200 ft, but past 150 ft it needs Govee's driver module, which comes with the 200 ft kit. Past 200 ft, you need a second set.
Not sure yet
Use the planner with rough numbers first. A few feet either way changes which option fits, so measure properly before you order.
What kind of outlet do they plug into?
For the Permanent Outdoor Lights 2, Govee's instructions say to "install only to a covered Class A GFCI receptacle." That's an outdoor outlet with ground-fault protection and a weatherproof cover. Its power adapter and control box are rated IP65, a step below the light strings' IP67, so they belong somewhere sheltered rather than under a dripping eavestrough.
On the Pro, Govee lists the power adapter for indoor use, so where it plugs in is part of the plan before anything gets mounted.
No outlet near where the lights will start? Adding or moving one is a job for a licensed electrician. We install the lights. We don't do electrical work.
